Sunday Paper PLUS Recommends—Week of December 17, 2023
At The Sunday Paper, we often discover books, podcasts, films, and other works that move the needle and spark inspiring change. This week, we are thrilled to hand the mic again to our Sunday Paper Plus readers! Our thanks to Patty, Nancy, and Lori for their recommendations. We hope what they suggest below opens your heart and mind.
What Patty Is Watching
Novelist Anthony Doerr's World War II story All the Light We Cannot See receives a stunning adaptation in the new Netflix series of the same name. Starring Aria Mia Loberti and Mark Ruffalo, this beautiful story tells of Werner Pfenning, a German boy who goes to military school, and Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl who takes refuge in her great-uncle's house after Nazi Germany invades Paris. It is ethereal, beautiful, heart-wrenching, and transcendent. Thanks for the rec, Patty!
What Nancy Is Reading
We were thrilled when Nancy recommended The Only Woman in the Room, a New York Times bestselling novel about the true story of Hedy Lamar, a brilliant woman underestimated by the world and endlessly bold in her courage. Viewed as a glamour icon, Lamar's deepest, truest self was that she was a scientist with a plan to modernize communication. This is an exceptional story of grit and determination.
What Lori Is Listening to
As she has throughout her long career, Katie Couric asks insightful questions on her podcast Next Question with Katie Couric. Sunday Paper PLUS member Lori nudged us to listen to the episode Katie Plus One Goes Renegade: Mary Trump and Adam Kinzinger On The Way Back from Our Divided Political Moment where the veteran journalist joins forces with the author and former politician, respectively, to talk about the state and future of our democracy.
