"Listen to your intuition." "Trust your gut." "The answers are within." These sentences teeter on cliché for a reason: They are true. But how often do we listen to them?

Thankfully, MaryAnn DiMarco reminds us to do just that. As a revered psychic medium and spiritual teacher, DiMarco shows us the comfort that can come from tapping into our higher wisdom. In her new book The Guide(s) Book, she illustrates how every one of us has a team of Spirit Guides here to counsel us through life's complexities and upheavals, providing us with divine messages to help us live in integrity. With every challenge we face, we have the capacity to get quiet and ask our Guides to show us the way.

In truth, DiMarco recognizes that not everyone may use the same language or tactics to access their Guides that she does, and that is okay. Whether you call it Spirit, intuition, or simply a gut feeling, what's important is knowing that you can expand yourself to something bigger—and if you choose to do so, a life of immense beauty, clarity, and strength unfolds.

A CONVERSATION WITH MARYANN DIMARCO

Early in the book, you write, "That's the human experience: It's a big adventure, an ongoing journey, a road trip that never ends. And since our Guides are always along for the ride anyway, why not start a dialog?" So, let's start there: Who are our Guides and what is their intention?

Our Guides are our universal team on the other side, here to help us and here to guide us. But what I have found most of all is that their true job is to help us understand who we are, why we came here, and what we signed up for. They're highlighting our higher self, which is really the information that we already know to be true. They're not telling us what we don't already feel. They're confirming for us that we're not alone and that our intuition is a true thing that we can trust.

It's beautiful to hear this because the last time we spoke, we discussed how having our Guides means that we're never alone, which is a comforting truth, especially given how many people feel lonely.

Yes! In this book, I write about some of my darkest hours. I wasn't technically working with my Guides then, but when I reflected on these stories that started coming up, stories that my Guides were telling me to write about, I realized they had been there all along and that they were bringing me messages of comfort, either through somebody else or within my own intuitive self. And I was listening to them the entire time. I just didn't have a name for it [then], or I didn't really understand the process behind it. That's something that's beautiful and has brought me a tremendous amount of comfort, not only in my personal life, but very much so through the work that I do. And I believe I'm a calm person in many ways because of it.

Talking about calm, there doesn't seem to be a lot of it these days. There's upheaval and political violence. Anchoring us in this moment, how can tapping into our wisdom and listening to our Guides help us focus on our personal evolution when we feel so distracted amidst such chaos?

What I've learned, especially in times like we're experiencing now with global upheaval, whether it's in your personal life or around the world, is that our Guides place a lot of accountability and responsibility back on us. It comes down to a choice of what we want to put out into the world and how we want to process, not only what we're receiving but what we're choosing to give back. It comes down to how we use our words and how we look at one another. Again, it's about accountability, and they are here to guide us. But they are not our answer. They are leading us to beautiful answers, if we say yes, and sometimes to challenging ones as well. But I find comfort in the fact that we are always being guided.

I've gotten really busy in my work because more and more people are looking to understand how they, too, can not only contribute to themselves in a positive way, but also be in service to others. Like any spiritual awakening, we sometimes have to face these challenges and crumble in certain areas in order to rebuild. My hope is that people are sharing their inner love and experiences, not only for themselves, but also to share with others.

As you talk about accountability, it brings up the word "capability." This work reminds us of what we're capable of in our own immediate lives, families, and communities. What are your thoughts on this?

We're all co-creators along with the universe. We're not separate from this light that we all talk about. We are part of it. We're part of that light and within that light, we have a lot of power as human beings, and our perception and how we choose to use that power, and the words that we say and our actions that we take, whether they are within our own family unit or on a bigger scale, is up to us.

For me, it has brought tremendous relief. I get to see myself in a new light, and I get to hold myself in a space that forces me to reflect, be aware, and examine myself a little more closely. It can bring you to some uncomfortable spaces, for sure, but after that, there's this beautiful calm and understanding, and you're just living in the most authentic part of your life when you process this way.

How can someone open themselves to channel messages and listen to their Guides?

I always tell people the first step is to trust. Let's first trust that we're all psychic in some way, whether you want to call it intuition or instinct or whatever you like. You don't have to be a psychic medium. The answers lie within you, and you can find them. So, let's first trust in that—that there's something bigger going on.

Then, establish a belief system. Where is your belief system? What does it do for you, and what do you do for it? Can you create a consistent spiritual practice in that belief system? Can you create a consistent spiritual practice in whatever that belief system is? Is it serving the greater good and the highest good of all concerned? Are you taking the most authentic parts of any belief system that serves you really well and choosing to implement them into your lives?

When we do that, we start the dialog. We start a dialogue not only with ourselves, but we're also cueing the universe. We're saying, 'Hey, I'm ready to hear you. I'm ready to listen. And if you show me the way, I will say yes.' What that does is it brings you into your storyline, and it empowers you to start creating along with them. And then it becomes fun, and you can start asking for signs and symbols. You can meditate, journal, or do whatever serves you. Be consistent in that, and just like any other muscle, you start making it strong. You're exercising it and nourishing it. Then from there, you continue to create your own authentic style and your own relationship with your Guides and your higher self.

And again, that trust is so important.

Trust is the biggest thing. I always recommend that everybody create their own style. You don't have to do it the way that I do it. I offer suggestions, but maybe you would rather sit at the beach and listen to the waves, where you can hear your own inner voice. That's enough. That's your spiritual practice, and that's how you connect to your Guides and the universe. And I think it frees a lot of people to let them know that you can do this any way you want.
