It was raining outside the other day as I sat down to write this column. That excited me because I love the rain.

I wanted to get as close to it as I could without getting drenched. I wanted to listen to the rhythm of the raindrops as I listened to the beat of my own heart. I know I shouldn’t take my heart for granted, but far too often, I do. But not today.

On this Memorial Day weekend, I know many hearts have ceased to beat just so that I can still be sitting here with my own beating heart. Many, many people have given their lives in service to our country so that the rest of us can be alive today and enjoy this holiday with our families.
