This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving, a day when millions of families gather around dinner tables all across this country. I’ve long written about how Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it focuses on some of the things I love most: family, food, faith, and yes, even football. (Speaking of which, Go Blue on Saturday!)
As I’ve shared here before, I love to gather and bring people together at my dinner table. In fact, the whole week leading up to Thanksgiving is my favorite week of the year, and I kicked it off this year by interviewing my daughter Katherine about her new children’s book Kat and Brandy, which is such a sweet and beautiful book. Interviewing her was also such a beautiful experience for me.
As much as I love this time of year, though, I also recognize that politics has made gathering at the dinner table more complicated for millions of families this Thanksgiving. In fact, the latest statistics I read said something like 60 million Americans have experienced a rupture in their families due to differing political opinions! It’s certainly no secret that my family has experienced a very public rupture of our own due to politics, and that has been heartbreaking, painful, and maddening in its own ways.
