Sunday Paper Recommends—Week of July 6, 2025
This week at The Sunday Paper, we're sharing two must-see documentaries, a new podcast, a new book, and a recipe that we believe will add inspiration to your days. We hope these suggestions open your heart and mind and encourage you to come together for meaningful conversations.
What We’re Watching
First, we're tuning into Caregiving, a new PBS documentary Executive Produced by Bradley Cooper and narrated by Uzo Aduba. The documentary tells the stories of paid and unpaid caregivers as they navigate the challenges and joys of this tough and deeply meaningful work. Weaving together intimate personal stories with the untold history of caregiving, this documentary reveals the state, and stakes, of caregiving in America today.
Ocean Ramsey, a marine conservationist, free diver, and activist swims with sharks in a new can't-stop-watching documentary. Blockbusters like Jaws (celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer) have solidified sharks as deadly predators, but this documentary is hoping to unravel that reputation. Check it out now on Netflix.
What We’re Listening To
As avid readers and book lovers (Ahem, have you joined our book club yet?) we are beyond excited about this new podcast hosted by award-winning journalist Danielle Robay for Reese's Book Club. Each week, Bookmarked bring literary insight and book pop culture. Listen to Danielle's first episode where she's joined by Emily Henry and Yulin Kuang to talk all things romance, reading red flags and "cinnamon roll men."
What We’re Reading
Jen Pastiloff convinced herself My life is fine and fine’s enough, until the whisper that something was missing turned full-on scream. Proof of Life is Pastiloff's account of reclaiming her voice and desire by radically changing her life. She shows us it is never too late to begin again, or to let go of stories like: I don’t deserve this; I don’t get to be happy; no one will love me; I’m too old, to name a few. This book is a reminder that your birthright is not stress or shame and that you don’t have to show proof that you are worthy or deserving. You are your own proof of life.
What We’re Making
Summer Corn + Stone Fruit + Sungold Salad
Ingredients
5 ears of fresh corn
1 large nectarine
1–2 cups Sungold tomatoes
¼ cup fresh basil, chiffonade
¼ red onion, very thinly sliced and soaked in ice water (to mellow the bite)
Large pinch of kosher salt
Large pinch of freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
Fresh Burrata
Method
1. Shuck your corn!
Lay the corn horizontally on your cutting board (not upright!) and slice the kernels off the cob to create a flat, safe cutting surface. Add to a large mixing bowl.
2. Prep your produce:
– Thinly slice the nectarine.
– Wash and remove the tops from the Sungold tomatoes.
– Roll your basil leaves like a joint (yes, really - i’ve never actually done this, but i’ve chiffonaded lots of basil) and chiffonade into fine ribbons.
– Thinly slice your red onion (use a mandoline if you have one) and soak the slices in ice water to take the edge off.
3. Dress it up:
Drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar over the salad. Add salt and pepper to taste.
4. Mix it with your hands.
Yes, your hands. It’s the best way to bring it all together.
5. Top with Burrata
Top with olive oil, S + P
