The New Year always seems to inspire putting a new plan in place to improve our lives…and oftentimes the focus is on things like eating healthier and exercising more. This year, how about a plan to minimize and maybe even put an end to your emotional suffering in 2022? How about a resolution to have more moments of joy and peace?

Just as your home needs cleaning and maintenance so it feels good when you walk in the door, so does the space inside of you where the voice inside your head is constantly chattering. If you are feeling less than good, content, or at peace, it's time to tidy up your mind.

There's a very good chance your mind needs a good cleaning from top to bottom. In the attic are your thoughts. On the main level is what you put your attention on in your outer world or your life experience. In the basement are the emotions created by what is happening in the attic and main level. If you want peace, you must maintain peaceful thoughts and hold your attention on peaceful things.

Here are 3 simple steps to tidy your mind:

1. Take a Thought Inventory.

This is where the maintenance and clean up begin. It all trickles down from the thoughts in the attic. Thoughts can either create a messy life of emotional pain and suffering…or thoughts can connect you to lasting joy and peace. What you may not realize is you get to choose the thoughts you allow in your space.

So, I suggest you make a list right now of high-quality thoughts that you would like to use to decorate your inner space. By doing this, you're setting the tone for your space. A few happy thoughts here and there. A few thoughts of joyful memories. Paint every wall within you with thoughts that stimulate a feeling of connection, joy, bliss, and relief.

2.Refocus Your Attention.

Now that you have the thoughts in your attic nice and tidy, it's time to move to the main level. Just as you get to choose the thoughts in your attic, you also get to choose where you focus your attention. Imagine watching the world going on around you through the lens of a camera. If you constantly point and hold the focus on things that make you feel afraid, confused, and or upset in some way, this will cause the thoughts in the attic to get messy and then the emotions in the basement create all kinds of unpleasant feelings. Refocusing your attention on things that make you feel grateful, calm, and filled with peace can help keep that attic you just cleaned nice and tidy.

3. Don't Listen to Your Roommate.

It's easier to keep a tidy house if we live alone. However, if you allow another person to move in, keeping things tidy becomes more of a chore. The same is true when it comes to thoughts you allow to live in the home of your mind.

Let's say you have old, painful memories taking up space in your attic. It's as if you have a roommate we'll call 'Old Pain.” When Old Pain is around, the more mess Old Pain will make. Old Pain wants to have all of the thoughts in your attic stimulate pain; he wants your focus and attention on the outer world to be only on those things that support and create more pain.

How do you deal with this roommate and minimize the power it has over your thoughts and attention? The simple answer is this: Don't resist Old Pain, just observe him and steer clear of him. When I hear Old Pain trying to control my thoughts and attention and create more pain, I simply reply, 'OK. I don't care about that anymore.” If Old Pain can get you to care about whatever he is thinking and pointing out, pain will be created…and you will be trapped inside with it. If you no longer care about anything Old Pain has to say, he'll lose his power. And eventually, with enough consistency, he'll stop being able to distract you from your lasting state of joy and peace.
