On Mother’s Day, First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia to meet with the Ukrainian First Lady and other mothers in the war-torn region. This week, she wrote about her experience in a piece for CNN.

“You cannot go into a war zone and not come away unchanged,” Biden wrote. “You don't have to see the sorrow with your eyes because you can feel it with your heart.”

In the piece, Biden goes on to share what’s on her heart and mind after her visit—the laughter missing from everyone she met, the permanent tears in the women’s eyes, and the gratitude so many Ukrainian moms expressed to the people of Romania and Slovakia for their support. As one mother told Biden, there are “no borders for our hearts.”

When Biden wished First Lady Zelenska a happy Mother’s Day, she told her she was there to show Ukrainian mothers that Americans were standing with them, and that she was “carrying the hearts of the American people with me.”

We love Jill Biden’s incredible outpouring of love for the women in this war-torn region, and applaud her expression of vulnerability in what she wrote.
